Normally the “Huang Mei Season” (黄梅天 or 梅雨å£èŠ‚) takes place in Shanghai during early summer (June/July). However, it seems arrived much ealier this year. A continuous wet weather that has lingered in Shanghai for 20 continuous days and broken a 136-year record for the longest continuous downpour. The number of people suffering depression has risen in Shanghai during the cloudy weather. Since mid-February, local mental health centers have seen about 10 to 20 percent more of patients, many of them young or middle-aged office workers or with a history of depression. The so called “winter blues”, is a psychological reaction caused by the recent bad weather. The symptoms include sadness, anxiety and inability to concentrate. The rain in Shanghai is expected to ease off this week but more showers are expected this weekend. Mental health experts have suggested that residents help avoid suffering the disorder by listening to light music, using bright lights at homes or offices, or indulging in easy exercise.
